Paris Koh Fine Arts (201 Bridge Plaza North, Suite 1, Fort Lee, NJ) is proud to present a group exhibition Contemporary Traditions: Sooyeong Chang Lee, Yongjoo Jang, YoonRyoung Lee, Myoungwha Kim, Insun Kim. The exhibition will run from November 1 – 15, 2025, with an opening reception on Friday, Nov 7, from 6–8 pm.

 

Contemporary Traditions explores the dialogue between past and present, nature and human experience, and tradition and innovation in Korean art. The exhibition highlights how contemporary artists reinterpret classical themes and traditional philosophies through modern materials, techniques, and personal expression. Across diverse media, the featured artists engage with time, space, and the emotional resonance of life, creating works that invite viewers into a reflective, timeless experience.

While working in different media and approaches, Yongju Jang, Sooyeong Chang, and YoonRyoung Lee share a commitment to blending tradition with contemporary sensibilities, capturing subtle nuances of nature, light, and human presence, and emphasizing a thoughtful, meditative interaction between artwork and viewer.

Yongju Jang reinterprets classical themes using modern materials and techniques. Through the interplay of light, shadow, and meticulously layered lines, her works explore the concepts of emptiness and substance, time, and the connection between past and present. Her pieces offer a “utopia of the mind,” a contemporary reinterpretation of Jangsaengdo (Painting of Long Life). Jang has held many solo and group shows, and her works are in major collections including the National Museum of Korea and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Gwacheon).

Sooyeong Chang creates sculptures deeply rooted in spiritual reflection and a profound appreciation for nature. Her works merge seamlessly with their surroundings, evoking timelessness, historical depth, and sacred beauty, as if they have always existed within their environments.

YoonRyoung Lee reimagines childhood memories through delicate oil paintings of girls, flowers, and butterflies. With fine brushwork and translucent layers of color, she creates a watercolor-like softness that evokes purity and serenity.

Her works transcend realism, offering poetic reflections on innocence and the quiet beauty of everyday life. Combining refined technique with spiritual sensitivity, Lee’s paintings radiate rare purity and modern grace.

Myoungwha Kim presents Traces of the Moon, a delicate exploration of contemplation and nature’s quiet beauty. Inspired by Geoje’s seaside breakwaters, Kim transforms reflective moments into poetic imagery, capturing life’s slow, mindful rhythm. The moon embracing a solitary island symbolizes harmony with nature, while her layered hanji technique creates meditative surfaces. Traces of the Moon invites viewers to feel the gentle embrace of nature and the calm rhythm of existence.

Insun Kim presents her latest exhibition, featuring Korea’s valleys and mountain ridges, as well as inspirations from the deserts of the U.S. and China. Through a “harmonious geometric order,” she transforms on-site observations of nature into artworks that reflect clarity, structure, and sensitivity. Using refined natural pigments—yellow, red, brown, black, and white—Kim creates rich, warm tones that convey the essence of the landscape and the aesthetic of Korean painting.

 

Contemporary Traditions offers viewers an opportunity to experience the evolution of Korean art, where tradition is not abandoned but reinterpreted, bridging historical insight with contemporary vision.

전시에 참여하는 장용주, 장수영, 이유늘령 작가는 서로 다른 매체와 접근 방식을 사용하지만, 자연·빛·인간의 존재를 섬세하게 포착하고, 전통과 현대 감성을 조화시키며, 작품과 관람자의 사유적 만남을 중시한다는 공통점을 공유합니다.

장용주는 현대적 재료와 기법을 통해 고전적 주제를 재해석합니다. 빛과 그림자, 치밀하게 중첩된 선의 조형을 통해 ‘허(虛)와 실(實)’, 시간, 과거와 현재의 연결성을 깊이 탐구합니다. 그의 작품은 ‘정신의 유토피아’라 할 만한 장생도(長生圖)의 현대적 재해석을 보여줍니다. 장 작가는 다수의 개인전·단체전에 참여했으며, 국립중앙박물관과 국립현대미술관(과천) 등 주요 기관에 작품이 소장되어 있습니다.

장수영은 자연에 대한 깊은 경외와 영적 성찰을 바탕으로 조각 작업을 펼칩니다. 그녀의 조각은 주변 환경과 자연스럽게 호흡하며, 마치 오랜 시간 그 자리를 지켜온 듯한 시간성과 성스러움, 고요한 아름다움을 자아냅니다.

이윤령은 어린 시절의 기억을 소녀, 꽃, 나비를 주제로 한 섬세한 유화로 재구성합니다. 정교한 붓질과 투명한 색의 겹침을 통해 수채화 같은 부드러움을 표현하며, 순수성과 평온함을 불러일으킵니다. 그녀의 작품은 단순한 사실 묘사를 넘어 일상의 순수함과 고요한 아름다움을 시적으로 드러냅니다. 세련된 기법과 영적 감수성이 어우러진 그의 회화는 보기 드문 순수성과 현대적 우아함을 동시에 담아냅니다.

김명화는 달의 흔적 시리즈를 통해 자연과 사유의 조용한 아름다움을 섬세하게 보여줍니다. 거제 바닷가의 방파제에서 비롯된 사색의 순간들을 시적 이미지로 전환하며, 삶의 느리고 사려 깊은 리듬을 포착합니다. 외딴 섬을 품는 달의 마음은 자연과의 조화를 상징하며, 한지 레이어링 기법은 명상적이고 깊이 있는 표면을 만들어냅니다. 달의 흔적은 자연의 포근한 품과 존재의 고요한 리듬을 관람객이 느낄 수 있도록 초대합니다.

김인선은 한국의 골짜기와 산맥, 그리고 미국과 중국의 사막에서 받은 영감을 ‘조화로운 기하학적 질서’로 풀어낸 최신 작업을 선보입니다. 자연에서 직접 관찰한 장면을 구조적이며 명확한 조형으로 변주하며, 황색·적색·갈색·흑색·백색 등 정제된 자연 안료로 깊고 따뜻한 색감을 구현합니다. 이를 통해 자연의 본질과 한국 회화의 미감을 현대적으로 재해석합니다.

Contemporary Traditions展은 전통을 버리는 것이 아니라 새롭게 해석하고 확장하는 한국 현대미술의 흐름을 보여줍니다. 이 전시는 역사적 통찰과 현대적 비전을 잇는 다리를 건너며, 한국미술의 진화된 깊이를 경험할 수 있는 특별한 자리가 될 것입니다.
