Paris Koh FIne Arts Proud to present a solo exhibition "Transcending Time and Space: The Artistic Journey of Oh Sechul" from May 1 - 11th, 2024 with an opening reception on Thursday, May 2nd from 6-8 pm.

This exhibition invites you to embark on a visual exploration across epochs and cultures, as presented through the unique medium of Korean traditional Jangj paper. Artist Sechul Oh's profound works, including "From Rome to Suwon Hwaseong," utilize ink to depict ancient ruins and historical narratives, beautifully illustrating the convergence of old and new. His art captures the essence of cultural heritage sites such as Rome, Suwon Hwaseong, and Florence, expressing not just their physical beauty but the ongoing stories they embody.

Sechul Oh's artistic journey began during a transformative 'Grand Tour' of Rome in his twenties, where he encountered the legacy of past artists, sparking a lifelong passion for depicting historical cities. This experience deeply influenced his methodology, leading him to develop a distinct style combining traditional Sumuk (ink wash painting) and vibrant coloring techniques on Jangi. Over a decade, Oh has perfected his craft, initially focusing on pencil drawings on the uniquely textured Jangj paper. His portfolio over the years has evolved to include a more dynamic use of color and Sumuk, enhancing his depiction of world cultural heritage sites and infusing them with a contemporary perspective.

This exhibition not only reflects Oh's evolution as an artist but also invites audiences to experience the depth of historical and cultural interconnections. It gives you an experience a dialogue between the past and the present, dreams and reality, all captured on the Jangji Paper. Oh's works from Rome stir nostalgic dreams of the past; those from Suwon Hwaseong attempt to merge these dreams with reality; and his interpretations of Florence ignite new dreams, suggesting a continual rebirth of inspiration and vision. "The Artistic Journey of Sechul Oh: Transcending Time and Space" offers a profound look into how art transcends temporal and spatial boundaries, providing a mirror to the human experience etched across time.

Sechul Oh was born in Masan, South Korea, is an acclaimed artist specializing in Korean painting, a discipline he mastered with an MFA from Chung-Ang University. His profound explorations of cultural heritage are displayed across numerous solo and group exhibitions, including his notable "Roma, Drawn for Ten Years" series. Oh's work has earned him several prestigious awards, such as the 7th MEDICI Award 'Grand Prize'. Currently, he enriches the academic community with lectures at Korea University and other educational institutions.

오세철 작가의 이번 전시는 한국 전통 장지라는 독특한 매체를 통해 시대와 문화를 넘나드는 시각적 탐구의 세계를 보여준다. '로마에서 수원화성까지'를 비롯한 오세철 작가의 작품들은 먹으로 고대 유적과 역사적 서사를 묘사하며 옛 것과 새 것의 융합을 아름답게 그려냈다. 그의 예술은 로마, 수원화성, 피렌체 등 문화유산의 본질을 포착하여 그 물리적인 아름다움뿐만 아니라 그것이 구현하는 지속적인 이야기를 표현하고있다.

 

오세철 작가의 예술적 여정은 그의 20대 시절 로마의 변화무쌍한 '그랜드 투어'에서 시작되었으며, 그곳에서 그는 과거 예술가들의 유산을 접했고, 역사적인 도시를 묘사하려는 평생의 열정을 불러일으켰다. 이러한 경험은 그의 방법론에도 깊은 영향을 미쳐 전통 수묵화와 장지에 생동감 넘치는 채색 기법을 결합한 독특한 화풍을 발전시켰다. 오작가는 10년이 넘는 시간 동안 장지 위에 연필로 도시의 문화유산을 그리는 기법에 주력하였고, 그 이후 그의 작품들은 연필에서 채색과 수묵을 매체로 하여 표현에서 보다 독창적이고 역동적으로 발전하여 세계 문화 유산에 대한 묘사를 강화하였으며 거기에 더해 현대적인 관점을 불어넣었다.

 

이번 전시는 오세철 작가의 예술가로서의 진화를 반영할 뿐만 아니라 관객들이 역사적, 문화적 상호 연관성의 깊이를 경험할 수 있는 기회이다. 과거와 현재, 꿈과 현실 사이의 대화를 장지에 담아낸 오작가의 작품들은 과거에 대한 향수와 꿈을 불러일으킨다. 피렌체에 대한 그의 해석은 새로운 꿈에 불을 붙이고 영감과 비전의 지속적인 재탄생을 암시 하는 듯 하다.

"오세철의 예술적 여정: 시간과 공간을 초월하다"는 예술이 어떻게 시간적, 공간적 경계를 초월하는지에 대한 고찰을 제공하며 시간에 따라 새겨진 인간의 경험을 반영한다

 

경남 마산 출생 오세철은, 중앙대학교 대학원에서 한국화 전공을 하였다. 문화 유산에 대한 그의 탐구는 그가 해온 수많은 개인전 및 그룹전을 통해 소개 되어왔다. 오작가는 제7회 MEDICI Award '대상' 등 여러 권위있는 경연대회에서 두각을 나타냈다. 현재 그는 고려대학교 미술대학과 기타 미술관련 기관에서 강의를 통해 미술계의 미래를 풍요롭게 하고 있다.
