Paris Koh Fine Arts (201 Bridge Plaza North, Suite 1, Fort Lee, NJ) is proud to present Borders and Backpacks: Childhood in the Crosshairs, a solo exhibition of works by Pam Cooper. The exhibition will run from October 2 – 29, 2025, with an opening reception on Friday, October 3, from 6–8 pm.

 

Mixed media artist Pam Cooper creates poignant and meticulously crafted installations that confront the social, political, and familial issues facing children today. The exhibition features Cooper’s paper-based sculptures and immersive environments that merge the visual language of nostalgia with the urgency of present-day crises.

 

For more than a decade, Cooper’s work has centered on children’s safety and vulnerability—whether inside the home, in the classroom, or at the hands of governments and social systems. Using handmade abaca paper, xerox transfer prints, and found objects, she constructs floor-standing and suspended paper houses, diminutive furniture, and room-sized installations that evoke both innocence and threat.

 

At the heart of this exhibition is a haunting paper recreation of a schoolroom, its windows opening to a deserted playground. The piece, created in response to the Sandy Hook tragedy, contains twenty canvas backpacks, each representing a child lost on that day. As viewers step inside, the familiarity of a childhood space collides with the reality of violence, underscoring the precariousness of safety in schools today. Alongside the centerpiece, Connected/Disconnected depicts heads bowed, absorbed in screens, reflecting our isolation despite constant virtual connection. The Closet addresses the devastating impact of gun violence on families, emphasizing the urgency of responsibility and regulation. In Tears and the Home series, Cooper explores children’s vulnerability—whether to school shootings or the isolating effects of technology—highlighting the precariousness of childhood today.

 

Cooper’s aesthetic draws from the look of a bygone era—pale parchment-toned paper, stylized figures inspired by old sewing patterns, and domestic details from vintage family photographs—yet her subject matter is urgent and contemporary. She illuminates the pressures facing children today: fractured families, the relentless influence of social media, and the persistent threats of violence, displacement, and exploitation.

 

Pam Cooper emigrated from the UK to the U.S. in 1990, becoming a citizen in 2000. She earned her BFA in Sculpture from Pratt Institute in 1994, where an internship at Dieu Donné introduced her to papermaking, now central to her practice. Every sheet of paper is made to the size and shape required for the work at hand, reinforcing the intimate, tactile quality of her installations.

 

With Borders and Backpacks: Childhood in the Crosshairs, Cooper transforms fragile paper into powerful testimony—an invitation to reflect on the forces shaping childhood and the urgent need to protect it.

지난 10여 년간 쿠퍼의 작업은 가정 안팎, 교실, 그리고 정부 및 사회 체계에 의해 위협받는 어린이들의 안전과 취약성에 집중해 왔습니다. 그녀는 손수 제작한 아바카 종이, 제록스 전사 인쇄, 그리고 발견된 오브제를 활용해 바닥에 세우거나 공중에 매단 종이 집, 작은 가구, 방 크기의 설치 작품을 만듭니다. 이 작품들은 순수함과 위협이 공존하는 모습을 불러일으킵니다.

 

이번 전시의 중심 작품은 샌디 훅(Sandy Hook) 총격 사건에 응답해 제작된 종이로 된 교실 재현입니다. 교실의 창문 너머에는 텅 빈 놀이터가 펼쳐져 있고, 20개의 켄버스로 만든 배낭이 걸려 있는데, 각각은 그날 목숨을 잃은 어린이를 상징합니다. 관람객이 이 공간에 들어서면 어린 시절의 익숙한 공간과 폭력의 현실이 충돌하며 오늘날 학교 안전의 불안정함을 생생하게 느끼게 합니다. 중심 작품인 The Playground와 함께 전시되는 Connected/Disconnected는 머리를 숙이고 화면에 몰두한 인물들을 통해, 끊임없는 가상 연결 속에서도 우리가 겪는 고립감을 보여줍니다. The Closet는 가정에 미치는 총기 폭력의 파괴적인 영향을 다루며, 책임과 규제의 필요성을 강조합니다. Tears와 Home 시리즈에서는 쿠퍼가 아동의 취약성을 탐구합니다. 이는 학교 총격과 기술로 인한 고립 등 오늘날 아동이 직면한 위태로운 현실을 드러냅니다.

팸 쿠퍼는 1990년 영국에서 미국으로 이주해 2000년에 시민권을 취득했습니다. 1994년 프랫 인스티튜트(Pratt Institute)에서 조각 전공으로 학사 학위를 받았으며, 인턴십을 통해 종이 제작을 접한 이후 이를 작업의 핵심 매체로 삼고 있습니다. 작업에 필요한 크기와 형태로 직접 종이를 제작하여 설치 작품의 섬세하고 촉각적인 특성을 살립니다.
