Paris Koh Fine Arts, 201 Bridge Plaza North, Suite 1, Fort Lee, NJ is proud to present a solo exhibition “Systemized language: Jian Kwon a. k. a Solbi”. The show will run from May 5 - 28, 2022 with an opening reception on Thursday, May 5th from 6-8pm.

 

 

Humans are enjoying a fast and convenient life with the development of the Internet. However, unfiltered, indiscriminate group attacks and verbal violence against individuals on cyberspace destroy an individual's life with insurmountable wounds.

 

Ji-an Kwon's solo exhibition 'Systemized Language: Humming' consists of two connected works, 'Humming', which expresses the message about verbal violence with three-dimensional line drawings, and “Systemized Language” is an installation work that alphabetize the shape of apples, which was obtained from a comment on the internet “Do you know how to draw apples?”

In 2020, the public attack on the artist due to Jeff Koons' cake plagiarism controversy became the concept of the work. Kwon creates controversial flat pieces on canvas. This leads to the Humming series, which visualizes the subjective thoughts of Artist Jian Kwon about verbal violence in cyberspace. In Humming series, Kwon makes music into her own language system to convey her message of verbal violence. Although she could not express all of her mind in writing, she reached the limit of language, but the humming her melody transcended the limits of her language by excluding the stereotype of characters and gaining freedom. Finally, the artist systematized the hum and expressed it visually. You can get a little healing from your broken heart by shouting out your pain with the systemized language to the public who has hurt you. If someone has hurt or been hurt by verbal violence on cyber, now we have to take steps to purify our language and keep cyber manners that are no longer hurt with a language that transcends language.

 

Artist Jian Kwon starting with her first solo exhibition in 2012 and through “Self-Collaboration”, where she combines music and art, in 2015, she is engaged in “arttainer” activities, introducing a new fusion genre, a world of original art. She was recognized for this, and in 2018 she received an award in the 'arttainer' section, which was newly established at the '2019 Korea First Brand Awards'. In 2019, she had a pop-up exhibition with French first-generation street artist Banga at Street Dream Gallery in Paris, France, an Insa Art Center Solo Exhibition, and she participated as an invited artist at the '2019 La nuit blanche PARIS' art festival. At the opening ceremony of the '2019 Gwangju Media Art Festival', Kwon was invited as a public artist for the first time to show performance painting. She received the 'Grand Artist Award' at the '2021 Barcelona International Art Award' (The Premi Internacional d'Art de Barcelona, PIAB21). This exhibition is her first solo exhibition in New York

인터넷의 발달은 빠르고 신속하며 편리한 삶을 누리게 해주지만, 싸이버 상에서 행해지는 개인에대한 필터링 되지 않은 무차별적 집단 공격과 언어 폭력은 극복하기 힘든 상처로 한 개인의 삶을 무너뜨리게된다.

 

권지안 작가의 언어폭력에 대한 메세지를 입체 라인 드로잉으로 표현한 허밍과, “너는 사과는 그릴줄 아니?” 라는 댓글에서 영감을 얻은 사과라는 특정 오브제를 색을 사용해 알파벳화 하여 표현한 문구 설치들이 이번에 전시하는 Systemized Language: Humming시리즈 이다.

2020년 제프쿤스의 케이크 표절 이슈가 터지면서 권지안 작가가 받은 대중의 공격은 작품의 컨셉이 되었고,작가는 문제의 케이크 작품을 켄버스위에 평면 조각으로 만들어낸다. 이것은 싸이버 상에서 벌어지는 언어폭력에 대한 권지안 작가의 주관적인 생각을 시각화한 허밍 씨리즈로 이어지게 된다.

허밍 씨리즈에서 권작가는 음악을 자신만의 언어 시스템으로 만들어 언어폭력에 대한 자신의 메세지를 전달 한다. 마음을 모두 글로 표현할수는 없었고 언어의 한계에 다다랐지만, 멜로디를 흥얼거리는 허밍은 문자의 정형화를 배재하여 표현에 자유로움을 얻음으로 언어의 한계를 초월하게 되었다. 흥얼거림을 작가는 시스템화 하여 비쥬얼로 표현하였다. 상처를 준 상대을 향해 시스템화된 언어로 메세지를 전달하고 비로소 마음의 무거운 상처를 내려놓을수 있을것이다.

싸이버 상에서 언어 폭력으로 누군가에게 상처를 주거나 받은적이 있다면 이제는 우리가 나서서 우리의 언어를 순화하여 언어 이상의 초월된 언어로 더이상 상처가 없는 싸이버 매너를 지켜야 할것이다.

 

권지안 작가는 2012년 첫 개인전을 시작으로, 2015년 음악과 미술을 결합한 “Self-Collaboration”을 통해 독창적 예술 세계인 신개념 융합 장르를 선보이며 “아트테이너” 활동을 하고 있다. 이를 인정받아 2018년에는 ‘2019 대한민국 퍼스트브랜드 대상’ 에서 신설된 ‘아트테이너’부분에서 수상을 했다. 2019년 프랑스 파리 스트리트 드림 갤러리에서 프랑스 1세대 스트리트 아디스트 방가와 함께 팝업 전시, '2019 라 뉘 브랑쉬 파리 (2019 La nuit blanche PARIS)' 아트 페스티벌에 초청 작가로 참가, '2019 광주 미디어아트 페스티벌' 개막식에 대중 예술인 최초로 초청되어 퍼포먼스 페인팅을 선보였고, 인사아트센터 개인전, '2021 바르셀로나 국제 예술상' (The Premi Internacional d'Art de Barcelona·PIAB21) 에서 대상인 '그랜드 아티스트 어워드' 를 받았다. 이번 전시는 뉴욕 첫 개인전이다.
