Paris Koh Fine Arts (201 Bridge Plaza North, Suite 1, Fort Lee, NJ) is pleased to announce the upcoming solo exhibition Joon Han: Not Futile, But Becoming, curated by Sooa Lim, on view from July 9 to 22, 2025, with an opening reception on Saturday, July 12th from 3-5 PM. 

Some gestures we repeat, not because they promise success, but because meaning reveals itself through the act of persistence. A shape, returned to again and again. A surface, revisited. A weight, carried not toward triumph, but toward transformation.

 

This exhibition follows the rhythm that favors process over destination. In the works of the young artist Joon Han, we witness not the grand spectacle of completion, but the quiet, steady formation of becoming. In one piece, a dark mass sits heavily on canvas, a presence at once immovable and familiar. Yet from its base, color quietly seeps out steadily, with intent. A red bloom. A wound. A gesture of life breaking through.

 

Though Han never names the myth, the viewer may sense echoes of a figure endlessly pushing a stone uphill. But here, the act is not one of futility. It is tender, cyclical, and ultimately generative. The stone doesn’t crush hope. It becomes the ground from which something else emerges.

 

Han’s own journey mirrors this philosophy. As a Korean-American artist navigating the intersections of identity, disability, and creative expression, his practice resists definition. With autism, Han navigates the world with a profound sensitivity to texture, rhythm, and repetition, which are the qualities that infuse his visual language with both tension and elegance. His works have been recognized by institutions such as the Korean-American Youth Art Competition and the Peace Island Institute. His academic excellence at Bergen County Technical High School was honored with the John Bernstein Memorial Scholarship.

 

But accolades, while affirming, do not define Han’s art. What defines it is his daily return to making, to the process of discovery and rediscovery. Whether through painting, drawing, or teaching arts and Lego to individuals with special needs, Han engages art as both a personal ritual and a communal bridge. For him, creation is not a final act, but an ongoing state that invites vulnerability, patience, and deep attention.

 

<Not Futile, But Becoming> offers a space to witness this state. The works here are not declarations. They ask without asking, layered and alive.. They remind us that art, like life, does not always progress in a straight line. Sometimes it circles back. Sometimes it waits. And sometimes, in the act of returning, it finds its bloom.

패리스코 파인아츠 (201 Bridge Plaza North, Suite 1, Fort Lee, NJ 07024) 는 한준 작가의 개인전 "Not Futile, But Becoming" 을 기쁜 마음으로 소개합니다.

이 전시는 임수아 큐레이터의 기획으로 2025년 7월 9일부터 22일까지 열리며, 오프닝 리셉션은 7월 12일 토요일 오후 3시부터 5시까지 진행됩니다.

우리는 삶에서 어떤 몸짓을 반복합니다. 그것이 확실한 결과를 보장해서가 아니라, 오직 ‘지속’만이 드러내는 의미가 있기 때문입니다. 되풀이되는 형태, 다시 돌아오는 표면, 승리가 아닌 ‘변화’를 향해 짊어지는 무게 역시 이러한 의미에 속합니다. 이 전시는 도착보다 과정을 더 깊이 들여다보는 전개로서 작용하는, 한 작가의 리듬 속에서 펼쳐집니다.

젊은 작가 준 한 (Joon Han)의 작업 속에서 우리는 ‘완성’의 장면이 아니라, 조용히 그리고 집요하게 ‘되어가는’ 모습을 마주합니다. 한 작품 속, 움직이지 않지만 낯설지 않은 존재인 짙은 덩어리가 캔버스 위에 묵직하게 자리합니다. 그 아래로 번지는 색은 폭발이 아니라 스며듦으로 다가옵니다. 피어나는 붉음, 상처이자 꽃, 침묵 속에서 생명이 터져 나오는 그의 예술적 몸짓입니다.

      작가는 신화를 명시하지 않지만, 보는 이는 끝없이 바위를 밀어 올리는 인물의 그림자를 떠올릴 수 있습니다. 그러나 이 반복은 헛됨이 아닙니다. 다정하고, 순환하며, 결국은 생성적인 행위입니다. 그 돌은 희망을 짓누르지 않고 오히려 그 위에서 무언가가 자라납니다.

준 한의 삶 역시 이 철학을 따릅니다. 한국계 미국인으로서 정체성, 장애, 예술적 표현의 경계 사이를 탐색해 온 그는 자폐 스펙트럼 안에서 살아가며 질감과 리듬, 반복에 대한 깊은 감수성을 작품 속에 녹여냅니다. 그의 작업은 Korean-American Youth Art Competition과 Peace Island Institute 등 기관들로부터 주목받았으며, Bergen County Technical High School에서는 우수한 성적을 바탕으로 John Bernstein Memorial Scholarship을 수상했습니다.

그러나 그의 예술을 정의하는 것은 이런 성과가 아닙니다. 매일 다시 캔버스로 돌아가고, 다시 만들어보고, 다시 발견하는 과정이 그의 작업을 규정짓습니다. 회화, 드로잉, 그리고 발달 장애인을 위한 미술과 레고 수업까지, 준 한에게 예술은 개인적 의식이자 공동체를 잇는 다리입니다. 창작은 그에게 ‘완성된 무언가’가 아니라, 늘 새롭게 살아 움직이는 상태입니다. 인내와 섬세한 주의, 그리고 취약함을 감싸안는 행위로서 예술은 그에게 삶의 의미를 불어넣어 주었습니다.

'Not Futile, But Becoming'은 바로 그 상태를 함께 목격하는 공간으로서 자리하는 전시입니다. 이 전시의 작품들은 선언문이 아닌 질문입니다. 겹겹이 열려 있고, 살아 있으며, 우리에게 말합니다. 예술도 삶도 언제나 직선으로 흐르지는 않는다고. 때론 돌아가고, 멈춰 서며, 그렇게 다시 돌아오는 몸짓 속에서 피어나는 순간이 있다는 것을.
