Gallery Yonhee at Korean Community Center (100 Grove Street, Tenafly, NJ 07670) is pleased to present the group exhibition "單Dan: Bongyeol Lee, Choongsup Lim, Hodeuk Kim, ChungYoon Kim". The show will run fron Dec. 18, 2018 - Jan. 30, 2019, with an opening reception on Friday, Jan. 4, 2019 from 6 pm and the Classical Music Concert will start from 7:30PM.
“DAN” the title of the exhibition is derived from Dansaekhwa, which means a single color painting. In other words, it can be called Monochrome painting. Monochrome painting is the ultimate goal of the hue itself. It is an art form that has a very distinctive self-identity and a world of Korean aesthetics. It can be seen that in monochromatic, there is another self-language that penetrates art terminology and grammar in the contemporary world.
Bongyeol Lee started painting after the Korean War of the 1960s. This was a period of great poverty and confusion, and in this uncertain time he may have started painting as a way to identify himself. Lee is a pioneer of monochromatization in Korea, exploring the coexistence of lines and spaces, and from 1970 onwards he has illustrated the creation of the universe and its processes in his work. Through his paintings, he shows an abstract work that emits Korea's unique colors and Western formative beauty simultaneously. Also, his paintings represent the purity of the lines in an empty and flat space. He had only 7 solo exhibitions, including Hyundai Gallery in Seoul Korea.
ChoongSup Lim shows the connection between nature and culture through his work by combining various mediums into one. The mediums used by his work connect the discoveries of the city’s daily life with the memories of the artist involved to create breath-taking moments in which audiences can breathe and feel nature in the fast pace of the cities. His work expresses the combination of minimalism and conceptual art. Lim graduated from both Seoul Arts High School and graduated from Seoul National University and graduated from New York University majoring in Fine Arts. He currently lives in New York City. He is a well established artist in New York.
ChungYoon Kim shows his geometric structure, which is a combination of straight line and surface. He mainly exhibited works that can be placed on the floor with a large-scale, but he presents a wall hanging piece in this exhibition. Kim also emphasizes the balance and weight of the object in a straight line that shows a minimal form, which gives viewers a sense of security. Also, his works simply depict the link between human and nature, but the use of heavy materials makes the meaning of the work stronger and grander. Kim is a sculptor based in New York City. He received his MFA at Pratt Institute, BA at Hong-Ik University, and Seoul High School of Music and Art, majored in sculpture. Recently he had a solo exhibition at the Youngeun Museum in Korea.
Ho-Deuk Kim is a painter who is leading modern art in Korea. He is the original creator of the hieroglyphic character ‘Muk,' which is a traditional Korean ink. He completes his work using his own visual language with modern representations. Kim expresses the oriental spirit in his work with the power and speed of his intense brushstrokes, and the changes in form of his paintings. His work is composed of ink and margins which are filled with tension and show the result of his exploration of space-time bonding. He demonstrates various meanings in his work which demonstrates the harmony that can exist in the concepts of existence and absence, vacancy and fullness, yin and yang.
Kim graduated from both Seoul National University and grad school majoring in painting and is recognized as a major contributor in Korean art. Recently, Kim had a group exhibition with Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst, and Lee Bae in Korea.

이번 전시의 주제 "단"은 단색화에서 어원을 가져왔다.
단색화는 모노크롬 페인팅 이라고도 하는데, 이는 말 그대로 단색으로 표현된 페인팅이다. 그러나 자세히 들여다 보면 한가지 색이 아닌 여러 가지 색의 조합이 절제에 의해 한가지의 톤으로 표현되는 기법의 페인팅이다. 한국에서 단색화를 많이 선호하고 있는데, "한"이라는 우리민족 특유의 절제와 아픔을 느낄수 있기 때문인듯 하다.
한국 단색화의 선구자라고 불리우는 이봉열 작가는 서울대학 재학시절인 1961년 대한민국미술전람회에 입상후 1963년 첫 개인전을 열고 1972년 대한민국미술전람회 초대 작가를 역임했다. 1975년 파리 개인전을 시작으로 전세계에 한국 미술의 위상을 높였다.
선과 면에 의한 회화성을 추구하는 작가로 최근 작품은 절제된 색채와 대비되는 필선으로 인간의 역동적인 몸짓을 은유적으로 묘사했다. 지난해 현대갤러리 개인전이 그의 80평생 8번째 개인전이다.
뉴욕에서 활동중인 임충섭작가의 "잡초와 함께 걷다"는 페인팅과 오브제 그리고 작가의 내면을 음악적 하모니로 잘 표현한 작품이다. 6년에 걸처 완성된 작품으로 도심의 깨진 아스팔트 틈새로 자란 작고 힘없지만 생명력만큼은 강한 잡초와 만나던 순간의 놀라움과 기쁨, 그리고 생명력의 오묘함이 잘 표현되었다. 오브제로 사용된 무명실에서는 팽팽한 선의 긴장감을 통해 정지된 공기의 진동을, 그리고 반대편에 부착된 쇠에서는 가는 무명실과는 상반되는 강함을 통해 작가가 느꼈을 잡초의 강함이 느껴진다. 또한, 하단에 골이 파여진 부분과 함께 나란히 부착된 실의 상반되지만 동일한 곡선의 조화에 해학이 느껴지는 작품이다.
뉴욕의 터줏대감 김청윤 작가는 지난해 말 잠시 영은 뮤지움 의 개인전을 위해 귀국하였다가 주목을 받고 국내 저명 비에날레 에 초대 작가로 작품을 선 보이면서 한국에서 가장 핫 한 스타 작가로 급부상하고 있다. 가장 절제되어진 인간의 형상을 선과 면과 공간을 통해 표현한 조각으로 "모든 재료는 결국 흙이 시작이며 마지막" 이라는 이치를 깨닫고 나무만을 고집하던 그는 비로소 재료와 표현 에서 자유로워 지면서 군더더기 없이 세련된 작품을 선보이고 있다.
서양화, 동양화 그리고 설치작품 까지 모든 쟝르를 넘나드는 김호득 작가의 이번 전시의 작품 "폭포" 는 먹을 사용하여 광목위에 빠른 붓놀림으로 표현한 동양화 인데, 작가의 안목과 세련된 현대적 표현방식을 볼수 있는 작품이다. 먹으로 표현된 폭포줄기에서 느껴지는 긴장감과 에너지는 시간과 공간의 화합, 즉 시공을 표현함으로 완성된 음양 조화의 결정체이다. 김호득 작가는 지난해 말 제프 쿤스, 데미안 허스트 와의 그룹전을 통해 전세계의 주목을 받고 있다.
