BOONSUN LEE

Boonsun Lee’s “In and Out:

Form is emptiness and emptiness is form”, creates profound and deep meanings. Lee delicately expresses a man’s repeating thoughts through her simple, yet intricate circles. A circle neither has a starting point nor an ending point. Various thickness and darkness of lines and colors with wandering dots around the circle represent the dynamic life of human beings –new beginnings, desired hope, and possibilities. Overall, her works of art creates a deep relationship between the endless circulation and the infinite thoughts of men.      -Paris Suechung Koh(Curator)-

Artist Statement

In and Out

The theme of my creation is the broad world of generation and extinction, and I use mainly soft material. Creation with soft material is not a new concept; it grows from a relationship with historical contexts. I focus on the materiality of the medium and the uniqueness of existence by using normal material in an unusual context and leading the unvisualized world into a new world. To do this, I need to review the awareness of problems and the situation of expression. It is my highest goal to generate continuous development for new expression.

I always exist in the center of reality.

Form does not differ from Emptiness

And Emptiness does not differ from Form.

Form is Emptiness and Emptiness is Form.*

There are trails of others who shared the same time and occupied the same space.

The distance between ideal and reality comes from clinging to myself.

Therefore, I think.

Repeating thought, before I know it, it cannot be new and generate light anymore, and becomes a dot which was not noticed, becomes a line and is completed as a circle.

The world of In and Out.

It makes me not be in it.

However, it permits me to be in it hesitatingly.

I was In at the same time when I was Out.

When there is no Out, there is no In.

If In will be gone, Out will be gone.

It is certainly near and sometimes far away, this world I've been living in.

But from the beginning, all of this world was nothingness to me.

I need to stop and slow time to see.

I view In and Out through my art pieces.

Before I am aware of it, In and Out go forward further.

They wander, banging and clashing against each other.

New beginnings, hope, and possibilities have started from In and Out.

Past and present beyond time created, shaped, and comprised an original space (landscape).

I've been trying to actualize a new art piece with a materialistic medium that can be a symbol and an anti-materialistic medium. Thus my creation's growing and development will be nurtured in the historical context at first.
